Last Minute Snowboarding Trip, 2009

My friend Chris is anxious to make it out to shred this season after he was sidelined last year with ankle- and shoulder-surgery from an old football injury. We are trying to make it up to Shanty Creek which is about 3.5 hours away from metro-Detroit. Chris’ wife’s family has a cottage nearby where we could crash for the night if we’re too tired to drive home.

If you’re more flexible, and trying to set up a last-minute New Year’s Eve ski or snowboard vacation, get in touch with the reservations desk, you’ll get 50% off all remaining lodging at Shanty Creek through January 2, 2010

Since Chris and I are both due in Grand Rapids on Thursday for a New Year’s Eve party at a mutual friend’s house, this might be tough to pull off.

I’m considering doing another 1-day snowboarding adventure like Brad and I did two seasons ago: we got up around 6am and drove the approximately 4 hours to Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville, MI. We changed in the parking lot where, as fate would have it, some soccer mom was the unfortunate recipient of my full moon. She was more embarrassed than I was, since she had been changing in her adjacently parked minivan (unbeknownst to us) and thought we might’ve seen her. We didn’t.

We had a laugh in the parking lot, and then Brad and I headed for the slopes where we spent the next 7+ hours shredding gnar, stopping once for about an hour to warm up, while downing two Irish Coffees at the bar. At about 530pm we hit the road, exhausted, and headed back home.
