Huge news for all the kids on shred in mid-Michigan — thanks to a collaboration between Ingham County parks & rec and Modern Skate & Surf (Lansing) there will be one more place to get your shred on – possibly as soon as December. This will be only the second public snowboard park in the country.
UPDATE (10/3/2011): CONFIRMED Snow making and possible rope. Tubing hill will have a rope. Rope for terrain park 90% confirmed. Also, there is an official Hawk Island Snow Park facebook page.
I’m working on getting more details and will post updates as they become available but for now here are the very basics:
- Apparently there has been some effort on this front since 2009 but things picked up early this year when Ingham County got an offer for a shit-ton of cheap fill dirt and decided to use that dirt to build a tubing hill at Hawk Island park.
- Subsequently the Parks Commission was asked by several members of the community (including Modern Skate & Surf) whether they would also consider a snowboarding hill adjacent to the tubing hill.
- The County agreed to loan $30-35,000 which should be repaid from use-fees.
